ANTIQUE RUSSIAN ICON MOTHER OF GOD IN SILVER RIZA - An antique 19th-century Russian Orthodox icon of Mother of God Areovindus, the Fire-like, flanked by Archangel Gabriel and Saint Pelagea. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood board. Titled in Church Slavonic in the lower left. The icon is enclosed in a gilt silver riza or oklad with etched and embossed decor. Hallmark of 84 silver standard and makers mark are on the rim. Total Silver Weight: 92.5 grams. There is little information about the history of this iconography. The now lost origin was created in the late 9th century AD. The face of Virgin Mary is turned toward her right side, and her garments are bright red red in color, thus the title Fire-appearing or Visible in Fire.
