GERTRUDE ABERCROMBIE AMERICAN SURREALIST PAINTING - Oil on masonite painting by Gertrude Abercrombie, 1909 to 1977, an American painter based in Chicago famous for her bohemian lifestyle. The artwork represents a Surrealist night scene of a woman offering her cat a ball. Titled A Lady and Her Cat. Signed by the artist and dated 1954 in the lower left. Associated American Artists label on the backside. Provenance: private estate sale. Wooden frame. Abercrombie was enthralled with her cats capacity for mischievous play represented by the offered ball while at the same time able to exhibit stoic, yet graceful ambivalence. Another animal tuned to the energy of nature, she too felt that connection through the creative act of her art that was the common ground she shared with them.
