1739 RUSSIAN IMPERIAL ENGRAVING MAP BY HOMANN HEIRS - A superb hand colored engraving map of the Russian Empire. Titled: 1739 Haas Homann Map of the Russian Empire Imperii Russici et Tartariae Universae tam Majoris et Asiaticae, quam Minoris et Europaeae Tabula. It covers the region from the Baltic Sea across Siberia and south into China including Korea, and Japan. The eastern coastline is taking shape with the formation of the Kamchatka peninsula. Hokkaido and Sakhalin Island are not yet fully charted and the area is noted as Terra Societatis Batavicae. Similarly, Novaya Zemlya is not yet fully charted as an island. The title cartouch features hunters, bear and squirrel. The secondary cartouche at top is titled Annae Magnae Vietrici Russorum Imperatrici... as a tribute to Anna I Anna Ivanovna, the Empress of Russia. Homann Heirs was a German publishing firm that enjoyed a major place in the European map market throughout the eighteenth century.
