MOLDAVIAN CUBAN SANDU DARIE ABSTRACT OIL PAINTING - Sandu Darie, Romanian, Cuban, 1908 to 1991, mixed media on canvas painting depicting an abstract composition in four colors. Signed Darie lower right. Mounted in a frame styled like a box. Provenance: acquired by the current owner from a prestigious collection in Havana, Cuba. The authenticity and provenance of this work have been confirmed by the Cuban expert Roberto Cobas Amate and are registered in his archives. Sandu Darie was born in Romania in 1908 of Jewish parents Darie trained initially as a lawyer in Bucharest. He migrated to Paris in the 1930s and became part of the first wave of literary and artistic members of the Romanian avant garde diaspora. Once in Cuba he established himself as an artist with strong emphasis on geometric abstraction. He represented Cuba at the 1953 II Sao Paulo Bienal and was part of the Concrete Cuban manifesto in the 1958 exhibit in Havana of the group of 10. Referred as the prophet of Concretism by his fellow painters, Darie led the Cuban Concrete art movement beyond local to a wider international attention. One of a kind artwork.
