ANTIQUE 1910S RUSSIAN ANTISEMITIC POSTCARD SHEVCHENKO
An original antique Russian Imperial antisemitic postcard depicting a scene from Haidamaky, an epic poem by Taras Shevchenko about the haidamaky rebellion known as the Koliivshchyna led by Maksym Zalizniak and Ivan Gonta. Taras Shevchenko, 1814 to 1861, whose grandfather and villagers participated in this uprising, was a prominent Ukrainian writer, poet, and nationalist originally born into a family of peasant serfs. The postcard features the quote from the poem in the Ukrainian language printed below. The poem was published in 1886 by the Suvorin publishing house, with illustrations by Athanasius Georgievich Slasten, 1855-1933, a Ukrainian painter, graphic artist, architect, art critic, ethnographer, public figure and teacher.
