His artistic practice is titled Outrenoir, Beyond Black, as the paintings he produces play with the light reflected off of the texture of the paint, emphasizing the depth of blackness. Applying the paint in thick layers, Soulages painting technique includes using objects such as spoons, tiny rakes and bits of rubber to evoke a smooth or rough surface.
