Bidspirit auction | PETRONA VIERA URUGUAYAN FEMALE NUDE
PETRONA VIERA URUGUAYAN FEMALE NUDE OIL PAINTING - Oil on canvas painting by Maria Petrona Viera Garino, commonly known as Petrona Viera, 1895 to 1960, the first female professional artist in Uruguay associated with the Planismo movement. Planismo is characterized by its bidimensionality with a plain treatment of the colors, a shiny palette with more mixed colors than primary, and a turned perspective, which causes the motifs to look like they are in the same level. Vieras work is different from the typical Planismo, choosing to make her motifs more about daily life than landscapes. This lot is a fine example of Vieras mature work, a portrait of a nude woman in black stockings. Signed by the artist in the upper right. Titled Figura de mujer, Female Figure, and dated 1939 on the backside. Framed. Galeria Bonino, Buenos Aires label is preserved. Collectible Modernist Fine Art, Women Artists.
