Sergei Potapov was born in Riga, in the family of an architect. In 1970, he graduated from the Moscow Higher Art and Industrial School. The first personal exhibition took place in Moscow in 1980 and was closed on the third day by the special services. Exhibition activity resumed in 1988 in Washington, D.C., with exposition titled Pavel Filonov, Dmitry Grynevich, Sergey Potapov, Three nonconformist artists from Russia. In his works, Sergey Potapov develops a personal artistic style, post-symbolism, based on the traditions of European symbolism and the Russian cultural and historical heritage.
