ANTIQUE RUSSIAN ORTHODOX ICON MALYSHEV WORKSHOP - A fine antique 19th-century Russian Orthodox icon. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood board with gilding. The icon depicts the Appearance of the Mother of God to Saint Sergiy of Radonezh shown wearing the Great Skema lower right, and the Apostles Saint Peter and Paul. Painted at the top center is the Old Testament Trinity, the namesake of the monastery founded by Saint Sergiy. The gilt borders are incised with strapwork and the clothing of the figures with extensive chrysography. Presumably from the workshop of Ivan Malyshev at the Sergiy Lavra Icon Workshop, ca. 1875.
