FAHRELNISSA ZEID TURKISH ABSTRACT OIL PAINTING - Princess Fahrelnissa Zeid, Turkish, 1901 to 1991, oil on canvas painting. The painting depicts an abstract kaleidoscopic pattern. Signed and dated 1963 in the lower right. Fahrelnissa Zeid was a Turkish artist and one of the first women to go to art school in Istanbul. Her work blends more traditional Islamic and Byzantine influences with influences from the West, including abstraction. She married into the royal family of Iraq in the 1930s, and her husband was the first Ambassador of the Kingdom to Iraq to Germany, and the couple lived in Berlin from 1935 to 1938. Her first solo exhibition took place in 1945 at her apartment in Istanbul, and from there her career took off as she lived between London and Paris. In 1958, she and her family narrowly escaped after a military coup in Iraq, and they relocated to London where her career continued to flourish.
