ATTR TO KARL SCHMIDT AMERICAN PORT OIL PAINTING - Attributed to Karl Schmidt, American, 1890 to 1962, an oil painting on canvas depicting a harbour scene. Signed lower right. Framed. Karl Schmidt is an American artist, known for Landscape and marine painter. After graduating from Polytechnic Institute in his native city, he traveled to England where he studied art and painted seascapes of Cornwall and coast of Brittany. He was a resident of Boston and Worcester until 1915 when he moved to Santa Barbara, CA where he was associated with the Harmer Studio. In 1918 he joined the Navy and served in the Bureau of Aeronautics. He later pioneered construction of lighter than air craft and rose to the rank of commander.
