ATTR TO EDWARD DAYES ENGLISH WATERCOLOR PAINTING - Attributed to Edward Dayes, English, 1763 to 1804, watercolor painting on paper depicting a landscape scene. The painting is in oval shape, matted and framed. The scene shows a river with a bridge in the background, leading to a cityscape with a prominent church or cathedral. A tree with branches extending over the river is visible, and a person is seen fishing from the riverbank. Titled Fishing near the Bridge. Bears several paper labels on the back side from Far gallery, Paul Magriel Collection, Collection of Dr. and Mrs. Robert Schermer. Some are hand inscribed. Edward Dayes was an English watercolour painter and engraver in mezzotint. He studied under William Pether, and began to exhibit at the Royal Academy in 1786, when he showed a portrait and views of Waltham Cross and Canterbury. In the three following years he exhibited both miniatures and landscapes. He continued to exhibit at the Academy regularly until the year of his death, contributing a total of 64 works.
