RUSSIAN ORTHODOX ICON OF SIMON GURY AND AVIV SAINTS - A Russian Orthodox icon representing Saints Simon, Gury, and Aviv - Patrons of the Holy Matrimony. Saint Simon is depicted as a middle aged man with dark hair and a small beard with a cross in his hand. Saint Gury is depicted as a gray-haired elder with a long beard also holding a cross. Aviv is depicted as a young beardless man in a deacons stole holding a censer. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood board. Inscribed on the top. Saints Shamon, Guria, and Deacon Aviv of Edessa were Christians who were martyred in Edessa, Mesopotamia under Emperor Licinius for refusal to worship the Pagan Gods. They are venerated in the Orthodox Church as Patrons Saints of the Holy Matrimony and their Feast day is celebrated on November 15.
