SURREALIST OIL PAINTING SIGNED LEONORA CARRINGTON - Oil on board painting, signed Leonora Carrington, British-Mexican, 1917 to 2011. the artwork depicts a mystical altar with two minotaurs. Signed in the lower left. Undated. Framed. Stamped on the backside, The Met, MoMA, Banco de Mexico. Born in Clayton Green, United Kingdom, Leonora Carrington went on to study painting in Florence, and later attended the Chelsea School of Art in London. While back in London, she was drawn into the Surreliast milieu and had a short-lived romance with older German painter Max Ernst. Abandoned by Ernst when he fled persecution to the United States, Carrington was hospitalized with a mental breakdown. After recuperating, she emigrated to Mexico, resumed painting, and became a part of the womens liberation movement. Carringtons work reflects a hallucinatory world in which myth, nightmare and the occult merge with the history of art to create an individual visual symbolic language.
