ATTR TO BEN AUSTRIAN AMERICAN CHICKS OIL PAINTING - Attributed to Ben Austrian, American, 1870 to 1921, an oil painting on canvas depicting a group of seven chicks and a basket. Framed. Inscribed, Ben Austrian and dated 1910, on the backside. Ben Austrian is known for Trompe loeil animal, still life and landscape painting. His painting career began by exhibiting a trompe loeil painting called A Days Hunt that received attention in Philadelphia. However, Austrians success came from his paintings of chickens. In 1902 he went to Paris, where he opened a studio and in London he was acclaimed The Landseer of Chickens. One of his chickens became the famous trademark for the Bon Ami slogan hasnt scratched yet.
