ANTIQUE MOTHER GOD UNEXPECTED JOY ICON W SILVER OKLAD - An antique 19th century icon with an 84 gilt silver oklad of the Mother of God Unexpected Joy, venerated as miraculous in the Russian Orthodox Church. The iconography is based on a legend recorded by Saint Demetrius of Rostov about a sinful youth who received unexpected forgiveness of his sins through prayer before this icon. The mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood board. The icon is covered with a silver oklad, or riza, adorned with repousse decor and engraved detailed patterns.
