Provenance: Private Collection of Mrs. Bukola Osukoya. Contemporary Nigerian artist, Bayo Ogundele was born in Oshogbo, Nigeria in 1949. Oshogbo became the site of artistic insurgence in the 1960s, later to be called the Osogbo School of Art, after the opening of the Mbari Mbayo club by local art affiliates which held literary, cultural and artistic workshops. With a focus on mending European techniques with Yoruban culture, Osogbo became an international arts center. The height of the movement promoted artists such as Rufus Ogundele, Bayo’s older brother. Bayo Ogundele began his training early and continued to study in Professor Wangjobes Art Workshop and the Institute of African Studies at the University of Ife. Ogundele is a printmaker and painter with work held in the permanent collections of major institutions such as the Mbari Institute for Contemporary Art. His work has been exhibited across the world including Germany, the UK, Czechoslovakia and Japan. Ogundele is currently working from his own workshop in Ife.
