ANTIQUE RUSSIAN MOTHER OF GOD ICON IN SILVER OKLAD - An antique 19th century Russian Orthodox hand painted icon of Mother of God with Jesus Child in Tikhvinskaya iconography. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, levkas, gilded on a wood board. Titled in Church Slavonic, lower to the center. Encased in a repousse and chased silver oklad. The silver riza is marked with a Russian Silver hallmark and other marks. Theotokos of Tikhvin is one of the most celebrated Orthodox Christian icons that is said to be one of the icons written by St. Luke the Evangelist. Since the 14th century, the icon was held in Tikhvin, where eventually Tikhvin Assumption Monastery was founded to host the icon. Religious Christian Collectibles, Russian Icons.
