ATTR TO F EDWIN CHURCH OIL COASTAL SEASCAPE PAINTING - An antique oil Coastal Seascape painting attributed to Frederic Edwin Church, American, 1826 to 1900. Signed with a monogram F.E.C. on the lower right. Housed in an old ornate giltwood and gesso frame. Frederic Edwin Church was an American landscape painter born in Hartford, Connecticut. He was a central figure in the Hudson River School of American landscape painters. In the 1850s and 60s was one of America's most famous painters. The paintings for which he became known were landscapes conveying a serene sense of light and space, showing nature in its pure state without the presence of human beings. The oil on board is stable with heavy impasto texture. The reverse shows a modern composition board backing. Housed in a very heavy, ornate, deep-cove gold-painted frame (likely gesso over wood) which exhibits minor age-related cracking and edge wear.
