SIGNED BIKASH BHATTACHARJEE INDIAN OIL PAINTING - An oil on canvas painting, signed Bikash Bhattacharjee, Indian, 1940 to 2006. The painting depicts two women in traditional Bengali attire, with one figure holding a bouquet of flowers. Executed in the artists characteristic style of social realism, the composition features a subdued palette that emphasizes the textures of the saris and the gazes of the subjects. Signed Bikash and dated 1981 lower right. Bikash Bhattacharjee was an Indian painter from Kolkata in West Bengal. Through his paintings, he depicted the life of the average middle-class Bengali, their aspirations, superstitions, hypocrisy and corruption, and even the violence that is endemic to Kolkata. Bhattacharjee is credited with bringing realism back to Indian art at a time when artists in India were leaning more towards distortion of figures and abstraction.
