RUSSIAN FOLK ART LUBOK HAND COLORED LITHOGRAPHS - A lot of four Russian folk art lubok hand colored lithograph prints. The lot includes two illustrations from the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, the Holy Trinity - a biblical story based on the episode of the appearance of three angels to the forefather Abraham, as well as an illustration from the Bible of Vasily Koren, also known as the Bible for the Poor, created in 1692-1696. Provenance: Gifted directly by the printmaker to Suzanne Massie, 1931 to 2025, the American scholar and noted interpreter of Russian culture, whose close relationships with artists, institutions, and intellectuals in both the United States and Russia were fostered through decades of cultural exchange, including close friendships with Mihail Chemiakin and Dmitri Shagin. An informal advisor to Ronald Reagan during the final years of the Cold War, specifically on topics relating to Russia, and in dialogue with figures including Mikhail Gorbachev, Massie played a significant role in advancing mutual understanding between the two nations; works gifted to her reflect this unique network of artistic and diplomatic connections.
