JUDAICA SOVIET LITHOGRAPH PRINT BY ANATOLY KAPLAN - Anatoly Kaplan, Russian, Soviet, Jewish, 1903 to 1980, lithograph on paper. The print is a dedicated sheet from his famous graphic suite illustrating Sholem Aleichems classic Yiddish novella The Enchanted Tailor. Depicts Chapter 13 the tragic climax of the story. The central vignette shows a dim shtetl interior where the tailor, Shimen-Ele, lies on his deathbed surrounded by memorial candles on the floor, while a grieving figure sits hunched over a candlelit table. Signed and dated in pencil lower right. Inscribed in pencil, Chapter 13, lower left. Matted and framed. Anatoly Lvovich Kaplan was a Soviet Jewish artist. He studied at the Higher Artistic and Technical Institute in Petrograd Leningrad under G. S. Vereisky and A. A. Rylov. The work of Anatoly Kaplan throughout his life was closely connected with Jewish folklore and literature in Yiddish, he was a creator of illustrations for the works of a number of Jewish writers, including the classics of Jewish literature, as well as Jewish folk songs. Anatoly Kaplan was an outstanding artist, illustrator, representative of the Leningrad school of graphics, who opened a new page in the art of lithography. The most famous are his series of color and black and white lithographs on the themes of the classics of Jewish literature Sholom Aleichem and Mendele Moyher Sforim.
