AVANT GARDE RUSSIAN POCHOIR BY MIKHAIL LARIONOV - Mikhail Fyodorovich Larionov, Russian, 1881 to 1964, a pochoir print on paper depicting a sketch of a cricket costume for the unrealized Mechanical Ballet, from the Goncharova Larionov: Modern Theatrical and Decorative Art portfolio. Paris, 1919. Signed in the print, lower right. The album catalogue Theatrical and Decorative art of Larionov and Goncharova is a report on their work with Diaghilevs enterprise. Mikhail Larionov was one of the most prominent Russian avant garde artists of the early 20th century. As an artist, Larionov began with impressionist landscapes and still lifes. In 1906 he was inspired by the works of Van Gogh, Cezanne and Gauguin, after which a close acquaintance with European painting made him not a follower, but an innovator.
