WINSLOW HOMER ENGRAVING THE BATTLE OF BUNKER HILL 1875 - Winslow Homer, American, 1836 to 1910, engraving on paper, depicting an American illustration titled The Battle of Bunker Hill - Watching the Fight from Copps Hill, in Boston. This work was published as a wood engraving in the June 26, 1875, issue of Harpers Weekly to commemorate the centennial of the battle. The Battle of Bunker Hill took place on June 17, 1775, in Charlestown, Massachusetts, during the Siege of Boston. It was a pivotal conflict in the American Revolution. The image depicts a group of ordinary Bostonians who have climbed onto a rooftop at Copps Hill to witness the battle unfolding across the harbor. A diverse group of people, including women and men in period attire, watch with anxious expressions. Matted and framed. Inscribed lower. Bear paper labels on the back side, providing information. Inscribed: Harpers Weekly, June 1875. Winslow Homer, 1836 to 1910, began as an illustrator at age 21. A realistic artist who captured the New England scene perhaps better than any artist before or after. Of an exhibit in New York City in 1976 the New York Times said his woodcut engravings were Timeless masterpieces.
