ANTIQUE LITHOGRAPH MARIE TAGLIONI AND SIGNOR GUERRA - Color lithograph on paper. The artwork depicts a ballet couple on stage. Titled below: Marie Taglioni and Signor Guerra in the celebrated ballet L'Ombre. The names are executed in facsimile signature. Dated ca. 1840. Framed. Marie Taglioni, 1804 to 1884, was a Swedish-Italian ballerina of the Romantic ballet era, a central figure in the history of European dance. L'Ombre, The Shadow, was originally choreographed by Filippo Taglioni for his daughter Marie, first performed by her at the Bolshoi in St Petersburg in 1839, then revived in a two-act version at Her Majesty's Theatre in London in 1840. Its story was even more preposterous than most Romantic ballets: the heroine, murdered with a poisoned bouquet, haunts her former lover to prevent him marrying another. What made it famous was the sequence where Taglioni sprang from rose bush to rose bush, alighting on pointe in the centre of each. This move is represented in the print.
