A mid-20th-century English Electric portable motor-generator unit in a reinforced wooden chest - A portable industrial electrical apparatus manufactured by the English Electric Company. A black metal control panel is positioned at the front, featuring a multi-point terminal strip, a control knob with a red pointer, and various connection points. Large-gauge red and brown cables lead to heavy-duty brass or lead battery terminal clamps. The internal panel is fixed with a small red square badge bearing the stylized white E logo for English Electric. Metal mounting brackets within the chassis are stamped with the numbers 316 and 317.
