Military General Service Medal 1793-1814, Six Clasps, Stephen Rooney, 83rd Foot - A Military General Service Medal (MGSM) 1793-1814, struck in silver. The obverse features the diademed head of Queen Victoria facing left, inscribed VICTORIA REGINA with the date 1848 below. The reverse depicts Queen Victoria standing on a dais, placing a laurel wreath upon the head of the kneeling Duke of Wellington, surrounded by the inscription TO THE BRITISH ARMY with the dates 1793-1814 in the exergue. The rim is officially impressed in block capitals: STEPHEN ROONEY, 83RD FOOT. The medal is fitted with six silver clasps, arranged from top to bottom as follows: SALAMANCA, BADAJOZ, CIUDAD RODRIGO, FUENTES DONOR, BUSACO, and TALAVERA. It is suspended from a straight swivelling bar on an original-style crimson silk moire ribbon with dark blue edges. The 83rd Regiment of Foot (County of Dublin) was an Irish unit that saw extensive service during the Peninsular War. This lot includes the original fragmented cardboard issue box, which contains a contemporary handwritten ink note on the interior lid stating: Vincent - from Aunt Julia. great - great Grandfather's medal. A modern research note summarizing the service and regimental history is also present.
