E. Hamilton, A Village Cottage Scene with Figure and Chickens, Watercolour, 1909 - This watercolour on paper by E. Hamilton depicts a quintessential English pastoral scene. The composition centres on a row of whitewashed, thatched-roof cottages set behind a timber picket fence. The cottage gardens are depicted with colourful climbing flowers. To the left of the dwellings stands a large, mature tree with foliage rendered in an autumnal palette. In the foreground, a figure in period dress, including a blue skirt and a hat, walks along a dirt track towards a garden gate while carrying a wooden hoop. Three chickens are situated on the path in the lower foreground. The work is signed and dated E. HAMILTON, '09. in the lower right corner. The painting is presented in a textured gold-toned mount and a moulded gilt frame under glass.
