19th Century Chinese Export Hardwood and Brass Bound Tambour Writing Slope - A 19th century Chinese export hardwood writing slope of campaign style, commonly referred to as a roll-top lap desk. The piece is constructed from a dark hardwood with ebonised stringing to the top and front panels. It features brass-bound corners and edges, with a central brass shield-shaped cartouche inset into the lid. The desk incorporates a mechanical tambour or slatted roll-top which retracts to reveal the interior workspace. The interior comprises a hinged, fold-out writing slope lined with green baize, situated in front of several shallow compartments and trays intended for stationery and inkwells. The lower section contains a single full-width drawer with a recessed brass handle. A steel key is present and the locking mechanism appears functional.
