Two Late 20th-century Balinese Carved Wood Gilt Highlighted Wall Masks Depicting Buddha and a Serene Deity - Two late 20th-century Indonesian wall masks, hand-carved from wood with a dark stain and gilt highlights. One mask represents the Buddha, featuring the traditional snail-shell hairstyle and an ushnisha, while the second mask depicts a serene deity or Bodhisattva with a tiered, fluted headdress. Both carvings exhibit characteristic Balinese features, including elongated earlobes with large circular spools and a central urna positioned on the forehead. The pieces are adorned with ornate, scrolling crowns finished in a bright gold-toned paint, which is also applied to the forehead marks and ear ornaments. The masks demonstrate significant hand-carved detail, particularly in the textured hair and decorative tiaras. No maker's marks, signatures, or stamped country-of-origin marks are visible on the surfaces of either mask.
