GREEK GNATHIAN POTTERY BELL KRATER WITH GRAPE VINES - TL TESTED
Ca. 4th century BC.A large bell-krater decorated with a colourful scene in red, yellow and white pigments against black glossy ground. The bell-krater has two lion-headed handles. The vessel is lavishly painted in black glossy glaze, the decoration is comprised of a linear register featuring a border of egg and dart, followed by a running zigzag motif, continued by a dotted band and incised double lines in between each band. Beneath this, an intricately painted grapevine motif, with fruit clusters and tendrils extending above and below a red band and flowing down at either side. This krater is a fine example of ancient Gnathia ware, formed in the region of Apulia.
