OTTOMAN TALISMANIC SHIRT - Ca. 20th century AD . A talismanic shirt, or Jama, with Arabic inscriptions on both front and back in Naskh/Thuluth script, surrounded by geometric motifs. This type of garment was believed to offer the wearer luck and protection and was another way of wearing a talisman on one's body, providing guidance and protection to the wearer against the evil eye and providing protection in battle. 'Jama' Shirts like this were worn by soldiers underneath battle attire providing a spiritual shield when engaging the enemy.
