PANEL OF SEVEN CALLIGRAPHIC TILES - Ca. Late 16th - 17th century AD. A large framed basalt inscriptional tile panel, likely a verse from the Qur'an that is commonly used on such dedicatory panels. This example using basalt, a type of stone found in the eastern Deccan that was used for decorative purposes in many types of buildings. Ceramic tiles, and epigraphic friezes executed in ceramic tile were integral to the decorative program of interiors in both Morocco and Spain. They were situated near eye-level, between a dado of tile mosaic and upper-wall decoration of carved stucco.
