GREEK BLACK GLAZE GUTTUS WITH GORGON - Ca. 350 - 300 BC. A black-glazed pottery guttus bearing the feminine face of a gorgon atop the tondo, perhaps representative of Medusa. The vessel exhibits a spool-shaped foot, a wheel-form body, a protruding ring handle, and a cylindrical spout with an everted rim, all enveloped in lustrous black glaze. The gorgon's visage is distinctly female, with piercing eyes and a tapered jawline, and the coiffure is styled into individual cords which distinctly resemble the gorgon's notable serpentine hair.
