EXCEPTIONAL APULIAN POTTERY DISH WITH SEA CREATURES - Ca. 350 - 300 BC. A very rare pottery dish with an elevated foot and a thick flange rim. The recessed centre is adorned with a radiating pattern. The dish has a black glazed background, with a design painted in reddish-brown and beige tones, highlighted with white detailing. The decoration depicts various sea creatures, including two fish, one of which is long and serpentine, resembling an eel, an octopus or squid, and smaller sea animals such as a crab and a shrimp. The rim is decorated with flowing vegetal and floral tendrils encircling the entire perimeter. For similar see: The Jack S.
