ROMAN GOLD RING WITH RED GARNET INTAGLIO DEPICTING AN EMPRESS - Ca. AD 200 - 300.A carnelian intaglio depicting the portrait of an empress. The intaglio is oval in shape with a smooth, polished surface. The engraving presents a profile facing left, featuring a finely detailed hairstyle or diadem suggesting imperial status. The neck is elongated and slender, while the facial features are rather simplified. Linear detailing suggests the folds of a draped garment below the neck. The intaglio is set in a gold ring with wide shoulders and ornamented with raised, leaf-like motifs extending along their length. The band tapers at the back and is slightly rounded, with a textured surface that follows the decorative elements of the shoulders. For similar see: The British Museum, Museum number 1872,0604.121.Size: D:15.29mm / US: 4 1/4 / UK: I; Weight: 6gProvenance: Private UK collection; previously acquired on the UK art market in the 1990s.
