A FATIMID GOLD FILIGREE CYLINDRICAL PENDANT AMULET CASE
Ca. 12th - 13th century AD. An exquisite gold filigree pendant amulet case of cylindrical form is finely crafted with an openwork lattice of interwoven scrolls and delicate twisted wire detailing. The body is divided into vertical panels, each featuring intricate looping arabesques, bordered by braided gold wire, creating a light and airy appearance. The domed ends are similarly adorned with delicate filigree and tiny granulated details. Three suspension loops at the top allow for secure attachment to a chain or textile, while additional rings at either end suggest multiple uses, possibly as a reliquary or a protective amulet holder. Such amulet cases, known as hirz or ta’wiz, were traditionally used to contain Qur’anic verses, prayers, or charms for protection and blessing. The craftsmanship and the use of high-quality gold suggest that this piece was created for a person of significant status, reflecting the Fatimid dynasty’s rich tradition of goldsmithing. Size: 55mm x 25mm; Weight: 15g Provenance: Previous property of a UK based Islamic art professional. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
