A KASHAN TURQUOISE-GLAZED INSCRIBED HANDLE CUP
Kashan, Iran, Ca. 12th - 13th century AD. A distinctive turquoise-glazed ceramic cup formed with a wide cylindrical body, slightly tapering at the base, and a narrow foot ring. Its standout feature is the prominent handle terminating in a paddle-shaped finial, which bears an inscribed Kufic script moulded in relief, possibly bearing a blessing or owner’s mark. The cup is coated in a turquoise glaze characteristic of early Islamic ceramics, particularly those produced in eastern Iran or Central Asia during the Seljuk period. The glaze has pooled in areas, accentuating the incised lines and the inscriptions on the handle. Surface wear and chipping around the edges are evident, exposing the reddish buff ceramic body beneath. Size: 160mm x 85mm; Weight: 250gProvenance: Previous property of a UK based Islamic art professional.
