AN IZNIK TILE FRAGMENT WITH SAZ LEAF
Ottoman, Turkey, Ca. 16th century AD. A vibrant ceramic tile fragment with the corner section of a larger square tile. It originates from the renowned Iznik kilns of Ottoman Turkey, dating to the late 16th century. It is composed of a quartz-frit body, underglaze painted in a lively palette of cobalt blue, turquoise, green, and Armenian bole red under a clear glaze. The fragment preserves a dynamic floral composition, with stylised tulips and rosettes springing from curved leafy stems, characteristic of the classical Iznik style. Fine black outlines define the contours of the vegetal motifs, enhancing the vivid colour contrasts. Though broken and restored, the fragment retains a strong visual impact and offers a glimpse into the rich architectural decoration of Ottoman religious and civic buildings. These tiles would have originally adorned the interiors of mosques, palaces, and pavilions, reflecting both technical mastery and aesthetic refinement.Size: 140mm x 120mm; Weight: 430gProvenance: Previous property of a UK based Islamic art professional.
