A SLIP-PAINTED BUFFWARE BOWL WITH AVIAN MOTIF
Nishapur, or Central Asia, Ca. AD 10th - 12th century . A slip-painted buffware bowl of shallow, conical form with a sharply everted rim, sitting atop a narrow, slightly flared foot ring. The interior surface is decorated with a complex scheme of stylised birds in flight, executed in brown and yellow slip over a buff ground, all under a transparent glaze. The birds are arranged in dynamic, overlapping compositions, surrounded by geometric and vegetal motifs filling the negative space. The central medallion features a lattice of rosettes within a multi-lobed star-shaped reserve, anchoring the energetic peripheral imagery. The exterior is more reserved, with a rhythmic pattern of radiating brushstrokes and geometric marks just beneath the rim, providing visual continuity with the densely adorned interior. Extensive restoration and areas of repainting.Size: 235mm x 80mm; Weight: 555gProvenance: Previous property of a UK based Islamic art professional.
