A NISHAPUR SLIP-PAINTED POTTERY DISH WITH GEOMETRIC AND FLORAL DECORATION
Nishapur, or Central Asia, Ca. 11th - 12th century AD . A slip-painted pottery dish. The design is composed of a central square panel with a bold swirling arabesque framed by four spandrels alternating with repeating registers of dotted Kufic or pseudo-calligraphic motifs. The rim is decorated with pointed ovals and interspersed floral elements rendered in dark brown slip over a cream slip ground. The painted motifs have been accentuated with a manganese-rich pigment, lending a lustrous, almost metallic sheen in some areas. The dish has been restored in several places, most notably near the central motif where break lines and infill are visible. Despite this, the graphic clarity and rhythmic balance of the decoration remain intact, offering a striking example of the stylistic and technical finesse associated with early Islamic ceramics.Size: 335mm x 35mm; Weight: 1.21kgProvenance: Previous property of a UK based Islamic art professional.
