A FATIMID AND SYRIAN MOULDED WHITE WARE LUSTRED POTTERY BOWLS
Iran and Syria, Ca. AD 1100 - 1200. A pair of lustre bowls. Both are wheel-thrown and feature decorative schemes executed in metallic lustre over a white slip ground, a hallmark of high-status ceramic production. The larger bowl, likely Fatimid Egyptian, is decorated in an abstract vegetal and geometric scheme rendered in coppery gold lustre, now partially iridescent due to burial. The radiating lines and swirling motifs are emblematic of Fatimid aesthetics, where calligraphic and vegetal patterns often intertwined. The decoration extends into the bowl’s cavetto, drawing the viewer’s gaze inward to the richly ornamented central medallion. The smaller bowl, probably Syrian, exhibits a more controlled and dotted motif composed of repeating circular patterns and faintly discernible scrollwork. The surface retains a warm amber tone typical of Syrian lustreware, achieved through fine control of the kiln atmosphere during firing. The overall composition is contained within concentric bands, a common structural format in Syrian ceramic design of the period.Size: 130-175mm x 40-90mm; Weight: 355gProvenance: Previous property of a UK based Islamic art professional.
