PHOENICIAN TERRACOTTA NEWT HYBRID FIGURE WITH FISH TAIL - Ca. 8th - 6th century BC A sculpture representing a newt, a mythical being characterised by having the upper half of a human body and the lower half of a fish. This sculpture is part of a set of Phoenician terracottas discovered under the sea in the 1950s. They likely came from Phoenician temples representing the Phoenicians and their main activities in the form of votive figures. Size: 34 x 36 cm. Provenance: Private European collection of Ancient Art; Ex New York Antiquities Gallery pre-2000; Previously in the Marwan Shehab collection, acquired at Asfar & Sarkis, Beirut, in 1964.
