PHOENICIAN TERRACOTTA MODEL OF A MEDIUM-SIZED BOAT WITH A CREW MEMBER - Ca. 500 - 400 BC A terracotta sculpture representing a typical Phoenician boat, reflecting the importance of navigation for this civilisation. The Phoenicians are regarded as the first great maritime people, who established coastal cities with strong harbours and defensive systems. As skilled seafarers, they developed an extensive and well-structured trade route that extended from Egypt to Gibraltar and into the Atlantic. This sculpture forms part of a group of Phoenician terracottas discovered underwater in the 1950s, likely originating from temple contexts and serving as ex-votos depicting Phoenicians and their principal activities.
