GROUP OF TIBETAN THOGCHAGS - Ca. AD 1900 - 2000 or earlier. A group comprising seven cast copper alloy thogchags of varied form and iconography, including: a large solar medallion with suspension loop and later mount; a smaller round talisman; a miniature bull-head amulet with sharply curled horns; a coin-like amulet with a standing deity; and several fittings and fasteners, such as belt ornaments, buckles, or clasps - possibly with symbolic or protective function. Thogchags, often made from meteorite or 'sky iron' (thogcha), were traditionally believed to offer protection and good fortune, and were worn on the person or affixed to ritual objects and horse tack.
