BYZANTINE HIGH KARAT GOLD OPENWORK CROSS WITH CENTRAL CABOCHON - Ca. AD 600 - 800. A gold openwork cross formed of four lozenge-shaped arms, each terminating in a pair of applied domes. The arms are decorated with filigree spirals enclosed within twisted wire borders, and each is surmounted by a raised dome with a granulated apex. At the centre is a circular plaque set with a deep red garnet cabochon in a plain bezel, bordered by a ring of applied domes.
