MEROVINGIAN HIGH KARAT GOLD MEDALLION WITH CABOCHON - France, Ca. AD 400 - 600. A circular gold brooch with a front plate decorated with four evenly spaced voluted scrolls in fine filigree wire, each radiating from a central setting. The centre holds a circular socketed bezel designed to receive a gem. A delicate border of beaded wire frames the outer edge of the disc. On the reverse, a horizontal attachment bar is secured by two gold clamps soldered to the backing plate. The brooch is mounted under a fitted glass display dome with a black wooden base.For similar see: J. J.
