CHINESE MARBLE HEAD OF BODHISATTVA - Tang Dynasty, Ca. AD 618 - 907 or later. A marble head of a bodhisattva. The face is modelled with full, rounded cheeks and gently downcast eyes beneath arched brows, conveying a sense of serene introspection. The small, pursed lips are touched with traces of red pigment, as is the elaborate top knot ornament that rises above the coiffure of striated locks. The soft, naturalistic modelling reflects the Tang emphasis on graceful monumentality, continuing into early Song aesthetics.
