TIBETAN SKULL-SHAPED MASK - Ca. 19th century AD. A dramatic Tibetan ritual mask carved from papier-mâché in the form of a skull, with fierce red-rimmed eye sockets, grinning teeth, and a third eye at the forehead. The crown is surmounted by five skulls, symbolic of the transmutation of the five negative afflictions into wisdom. The mask is further embellished with brightly painted pleated paper side ornaments in vibrant red, green, blue, and yellow.
