TIBETAN GILT-BRONZE BUDDHA - Ca. 20th century AD. An openwork gilded bronze figure depicting Buddha seated in vajrasana upon a high lotus pedestal, his right hand held up, symbolising the moment of his enlightenment beneath the Bodhi tree at Bodh Gaya. His left hand rests in his lap, holding a bowl. The Buddha is backed by a magnificent openwork aureole densely decorated with intricate foliate scrolls. Flanking the Buddha are two attendant figures standing gracefully. Traces of blue pigment highlight the hair. The elaborate base is richly adorned with low-relief narrative panels, likely depicting scenes from the Buddha’s life and images of other Bodhisattvas and guardian deities.Size: 275mm x 185mm; Weight: 2kgProvenance: Private UK collection, H.G.; previously with a London gallery; formerly acquired in 1999 from a London antiquities dealer.This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
